Marble Street in Ermoupolis

Marble Street in Ermoupolis, originally uploaded by jacqueline.fonte.

I find myself constantly, fondly reflecting back on my time spent in Ermoupolis.

It’s not much of a tourist destination. More like Greeks from the mainland vacation their in the summer.

The hike up the steep marble steps to the top of the town, past the dilapidated buildings, and hunched over old women up for their early morning prayers, it was worth it to see [...]

playgrounds

Are for adults, didn’t you know?

I have a strange fixation with playgrounds. They’re always so colorful, and I do love to take a ride on the swings.

You know, at amusement parks and fairs, how they always have rides that spin you around crazy-like? Those are my favorite.

When I was younger, some of my fondest memories were my father spinning my brothers and [...]

a little vino in paros is always good for the soul

I had a little dream last night, RogueRanters, and it went like so . . .

I was back on the Greek isle of Paros, indulging in a little visanto; for him, a red that had been “breathing” in a caraf of sorts.

The sun was shining and I had on my gold sandals. My friend was telling me about his day, and we [...]

crazy horse, i see you

And I raise you one.

Meet “Crazy Brows: A Self Portrait.”

As you’llĀ  recall, I had to re-grow my brows out after many a brow-accident. Best not to ask questions, but below you can see just how bad they were for awhile. This little slice of humor pie was taken while joyriding around the backside of Santorini. What was supposed to be a funny shot paired with a [...]

potd 3.31.2010: anchored in santorini

anchored in santorini, greece, originally uploaded by jacqueline.fonte.

once upon a time, a magical time, I found myself ATV’ing around the beautiful island of Santorini, yes, in Greece. Starting in Perissa, and perilously-slash-recklessly driving along the cliffs and the backside of Santorini- at least, I call it the backside, because the caldera is on the other- I made my way to Oia. It was about a forty five minute drive cut down to [...]

Gypsy Minstrel, Crank That Tune.

Gypsy Minstrel, crank that tune., originally uploaded by jacqueline.fonte.

On the pedestrian-only Ermou Street in Athens- one of the busiest shopping streets in the world, this gypsy-cum minstrel (if that is, in fact, what he is) caught my eyes. He walks and cranks this thing, music comes from it. Side by side, modern technology, cell-phones and ipods, ring all the while this gentleman is cranking out his tunes.

He winked at me after [...]

6 dutchmen, 1 german, 1 nor-can, and I

6 Dutchmen: tricky spelling and lack of familiarity means I can’t remember there names anyways.

1 German: Giannis

1 Norwegian-Canadian: Heidi

And me! In Chalkidiki!

Upon our last weekend in Thessaloniki (or, if you’re Heidi, you might say “Thessanoliki”- I joked with her about this), Giannis invited us, plus his 6 visiting Dutchmen to his cabin in Chalkidiki, more specifically, Pyrgadikia. Cue the drinking games, nutella, bread and cheese for breakfast- apparently a very [...]
